Posted by Tom Westley on
Victoria is a magical place to visit any time of year—and with December upon us, it’s a good time to take a look at all of the amazing things that are happening around Victoria this Christmas!
Many events are happening in full, or close to normal, for the first time since the pandemic began. We know many of you are excited about Christmas getaways, and the chance to see friends and family—and while you do that, here are some of the fun things that are happening in December.
Light Up Your Winter
There are some things that are just synonymous with the magic of Christmas—and we can’t think of any that are as dazzling or magical as Christmas light displays. And luckily, Victoria has a number of wonderful examples for you to bask in!
We begin with the most famous, the biggest and brightest, Butchart Gardens’ Magic Of Christmas Event. This isn’t just any old light display, this is a spectacular garden-wide event that transforms the already magical Butchart Gardens into a veritable Christmas wonderland, one that features over 300,000 Christmas lights! There’s also a host of entertainment activities including ice skating and caroling, so it’s a great place to wander and revel in the fun and magic of Christmas.
Lights Of Wonder
Another must-see display in Victoria is the Lights Of Wonder at Centennial Square, each year the square is transformed into a vibrant and colourful display, with an impressive collection of lights, as well as live entertainment by local performers, and a bounty of delicious snacks on offer from food vendors.
Finally, no trip to Victoria would be complete without a stroll along the Inner Harbour, and it too gets lit up for Christmas—with both the Parliament building and the Inner Harbour itself decorated with spectacular Christmas lights.
Christmas Shopping and Markets
Winter markets are one of the best parts of Christmas—encapsulating all the sights, sounds, smells, and that sense of community and camaraderie that is so vital to the magic of this wonderful time of year.
As it does all year, Victoria has plenty of great markets for you to enjoy, and if you need to do some last-minute Christmas shopping, some great places to find a gift while you’re there!
Christmas Night Market
Let’s start with something special at the heart of the city, the Christmas Night Market in downtown Victoria. Held inside the glorious historic Hudson building, it offers a number of permanent vendors, as well as more seasonal and local artisanal offerings. If you’re looking for something a little more activity, there are also a number of Christmas-themed workshops for you to try your hand at!
Tea And Treats
Something Victoria is famed for is its food and the dining experiences that come with it—and especially for the various afternoon teas and culinary offerings on hand at some of the region’s finest hotels and culinary establishments. And at Christmas, these venues certainly pull out all the stops to offer something truly unique.
Take the Festive Tea at the Empress, which reimagines their signature afternoon tea as a holiday offering, all for you to enjoy whilst serenaded by the harmonies of local carolers. Plus they if you’re wanting a campfire atmosphere without ever having to leave the city, they’re also offering a winter veranda. Here, overlooking the glorious sight of the inner harbour, you can gather around a fire, and some outdoor heaters, for s’mores, warm drinks, and festive treats.

Take In A Sight
One of the most exciting parts of Christmas is the variety of special themed events that are happening all across Victoria.
Beginning with something that has become a local favourite: the annual Gingerbread Showcase. The 12th iteration of this event is happening now, with both professional and amateur bakers showing off their impressive creations, which this year are set to the theme of ‘Coastal Living’, and supporting a truly worthwhile cause in the form of Habitat for Humanity Victoria. The showcase is held across 10 locations all around Victoria.
If you want to be transported back in time, then the Christmas experience at Craigdgdarroch Castle is just for you. During December, curator Bruce Davies and the staff at the castle meticulously recreate the traditions and trappings of time gone by in the castle’s period rooms.
The Bay Centre
Take comfort in Winter Wonderland, Victoria’s largest indoor living forest, featuring an interactive light tunnel. Plus experience a cherished community tradition and stroll through over 70 one-of-a-kind decorated Christmas trees in support of mental health programs at BC Children’s Hospital during the Festival of Trees, located in the Bay Centre.
The Great Outdoors
One of the perks of living on the west coast is the temperate weather, meaning we can actually enjoy the outdoors during our Christmas season, and there are plenty of outdoor activities to keep you entertained in Victoria this Christmas.
A short journey outside the city is Merridale Farm, which hosts their annual Christmas at the farm, a fun and exciting experience that is truly a joy for the whole family.
Or, if you want something a little spookier, and inside the city itself, then why not sign up for Ghosts of Christmas Past Walking Tour. Taking you through some of Victoria’s more macabre historical footnotes, including tales of folklore, a Christmas Eve murder, and the ‘White Lady’ of Bastion Square.
